Baccano! Episode 9 + timeline
30 10 2007
Y helo thar. :3
Wow. Episode 9 contained quite some plot twists, and considerable amounts of hemoglobin (read: graphic (read: fucking bloody)). We finally know the identity of Rail Tracer… who actually has a witty real name.
The Flying Pussyfoot arrived in New York. While an Asiatic informant notifies Nicholas of its arrival, the mysterious girl in green clothes who was on the train enters the editorial office of Daily Days. Her name is Rachel… and she works for Daily Days. In the director’s office, she reports everything she has seen on the train.
Back to 1931 on board of the Transcontinental. Yet another one has discovered the corpses of the 2 conductors: this time it’s Ladd. And you can’t imagine his happiness! He’s like a little child jumping in a puddle of water… well, for Ladd, it’s blood, but who cares! And one of the conductors was Dune, one of his henchmen, rejoice!
Now, everyone has seen the corpses, the lake of blood. But how could it have happened? Remember episode 2? The Lemure was pointing his gun at the other conductor after having told his story, and we heard a gunshot – it was safe to assume that the bullet went the same way. But now we are shown the truth, and honestly speaking… It’s shocking. The younger conductor manages to kick the gun out of the other guy’s hand, and rectifies his statements: Rail Tracer does come when people actually do NOT believe that story. And if he is already there, people must escape before sunrise. And then he shoots him in the head.
Another conductor enters the room. Weird, for there were supposed to be only two of them. One had to be an imposter… well, the guy who just entered was Dune. Pretty much unfortunate, because the conductor who just fired the gun… is the Rail Tracer. Lots of blood, quite an awful death, well… cool!
Daily Days. Rachel says that Rail Tracer was wearing a conductor’s uniform. Ha, you know what he whispered to her? “Your ticket, please.” LOL! He just killed a person like that, and he has nothing better to do than to ask the girl for a ticket! (Especially since she had none.)
Upon hearing this, the director is convinced that the conductor they’re talking about is Vino, and tells them what he knows about him.
Vino is a monster that appears in certain places for very short moments, and the director deduced from these facts that he must be a conductor on a transcontinental train.
Vino’s real name is Claire Stanfield, and he was an orphan. The Gandors who lived next door took him in, and he was part of their family, until a circus had taken him in. He trained very hard and obtained superhuman strength, which he made good use of later in his life as a killer.
Nicholas confirms that Vino has had contact with the Gandor Brothers.
Rachel also reports that Vino has killed a ten-year-old, most likely Czeslaw – and the director knows that too well, which is why he tells her she could always ask the boy herself then.
1930. Dallas Genoard wakes up, tied up, and gets told that they have been injected something – the elixir. Szilard Quates tells him that they are going to die anyway so they better obey him or… swoosh, one of Dallas’ friends is eaten. Quates discovers that the box with the 2 remaining bottles of Cure-All elixir is still at the Gandors, so he orders Dallas to retrieve the box.
Quates’ colleagues are outraged by his decision, but Quates justifies his actions by predicting a war with the mafia, and thus uses those four… erm, three people as his tools. Now that they are invulnerable, they won’t have many problems with dying anymore.
On the Flying Pussyfoot, Chane brings Mary Beriam to her mother who has been in the Lemure’s custody. Goose makes sure to explain the releasing conditions, and doesn’t shy at telling the senator’s wife that her daughter will die if the negotiations are fruitless.
At the Gandor’s home, Dallas Genoard runs amok, and retrieves the box.
Back onboard of the train, Czeslaw wants to talk to Ladd in a dark room. The little boy sure is acting weird, he runs around, talks in a girly voice, and pours a lot of compliments on Ladd. Then he asks him… if he could kill all the people in the dining car?!?
And guess who has been listening to this conversation… Rail Tracer! Rawr~
Wah, this episode sure was interesting. Who would have thought that Rachel was totally inoffensive? I didn’t. Well, sure, she was frightened when Rail Tracer whispered in her ear, but… she was so shady, so mysterious, that I did think she had something evil in mind. Oh well, another nice girl in this huge universe of Baccano.
Vino… or should I say, Claire… bwahaha, what a funny name. No wonder he became an assassin later on in his life, he probably has always been mobbed by his brothers, then the circus people XD Nah I’m joking. But yeah, he almost reaches Ladd’s level of craziness. He perhaps even exceeds it. And I thought once again that Vino might be another immortal going crazy, or so…
Well, about his behavior… The director already has said it, Vino has his own (distorted) ethic rules, his own sense of justice. As far as I could follow his logic, perhaps the fact that there were people who wanted to kill others just made him think that he must kill those people. Let’s take the old conductor, the Lemure for instance. His organization was planning to keep people hostages to free Huey, and to kill people if need be. From that point on, I think he swore death to all of those guys. Then, when Ladd’s guy arrived in the conductor’s room, he admitted (under heavy torture) that the Russos only wanted to kill for fun, and Vino then found another enemy he should exterminate.
For the records, Vino did not kill Rachel, because she didn’t have any murderous intent. Nor has he touched any other person on the train yet. And if I remember the first episode correctly, Jacuzzi, Nice and the others, as well as Isaac and Miria have survived. So? Is this theory right? We’ll have to see.
Rachel reports that he killed Czeslaw. Well, after Czes’ last lines, I can imagine why Vino would want to kill him.
Speaking of whom, perhaps I now found Czeslaw’s goal. He probably wants Ladd to kill all the people in the dining car to see if there are any immortals on board. Not bad, but I guess he will encounter problems with Ladd. Once again the first episode, Czes gets a nice headshot by Ladd…
And last but not least, Dallas Genoard… he takes the Gandors head on, but who knows what he is up to. Now that he is invulnerable, he probably will abuse of his powers and cause some gang war… then again, that’s perhaps Quates’ goal.
Well, I am in a hurry, and I think I have said everything there was to say so far. Perhaps I can think of other things tomorrow… Oh yeah, since Ayu has only released Baccano up to episode 9 (slowpokes! j/k, you guys are doing a wonderful job :P), I will start watching the raws tomorrow. It most probably will take me more time to find out some meanings and stuff, since I am not that knowledgeable in Japanese yet. But I will try, ne ^^
Either way, here’s your timeline as always, updated for ep 9! (1.75 MB .jpg) Enjoy~
