To Aru Majutsu no Index - Episode 2

nekosasu | October 11, 2008 | 11:16 pm
Awwww...
She’s so lovely. Awwww…

Yep, this anime is awesome. And I get my Komoe fix!

She's so defenseless... :3
She’s so defenseless… :3

This episode too followed the manga to the letter, up to the half of chapter 5. Basically, Touma fights off Style (the fire magician) who hurt Index, has trouble with that fire creature Innocentus (thanks Rinne for the heads-up), discovers the paper seals a floor below, voids them with the fire-alarm sprinkler, and owns the magician. Finally, he brings injured Index to Komoe-sensei so she can use Index’s healing magic.

But despite knowing the manga beforehand, this episode was really awesome. I found absolutely no flaws in this episode, it was perfect in almost every aspect.

Touma is quite GAR. He falls down the balcony of the third or fourth level, lands on an intermediary roof, and finally onto bicycles. And yet he manages to stand up like nothing… Why. Did his right hand nullify the shock of the fall? Is he just that badass GAR I believe him to be right now? Hah. But it’s yet another cellular phone gone toast. Sucks to be him.

But his real GARness only appears later on, as he makes that uber cool entrance from the elevator. Heck, not even looking back at Innocentus, he just stretches his hand upwards and owns it.
And I almost thought he would be a good-for-nothing, but he figured the ink would run on the wet papers, thus neutralizing the magic field. Genius! Most witty main characters would waste their time ripping off every of those papers… But still, what a gambler. What if it had been permanent ink? *slaps Style for bad preparations and hands him the “Evil Guys For Dummies” book*

Finally, the pinnacle of GAR is that amazing fist he sends right into that magician’s face. Heck, I knew it would happen - after all, it’s exactly the same as in the manga - but it was almost as if I had seen it for the first time. GJ!
And this all happened in perfect animation. Neko is impressed. And he’s glad.

Now, why would I sound so overly enthusiastic right now? Because I got my fix of Komoe-sensei goodness! And I can’t stop repeating it:

KOMOE IS MOE! MOE! MOEEEE!

Please wait two seconds while neko wipes off his drool from the keyboard.
…
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Err, so anyway. Komoe is fucking moe. She’ll definitely be my pick for my personal harem.

However, there is a small disappointment nevertheless. It wasn’t that apparent in the manga, but here they made sure to show them close up.

No!

NOO!

T___T

TONS of cigarette butts and beer cans. THIS CAN’T BE! T_______T My cute loli teacher drinks and smokes? UNPOSSIBLE. Alcohol is fine, but tobacco… ah well. Gotta be TOLERANT, ne. I’ll make her stop smoking!! D:<

Anyway… Knowing that only adults are shown drinking in 90% of the anime/manga/doramas I’ve watched, I assume Komoe must be an adult.
Fact is, she apparently is a normal person, as in she has no psychic abilities (despite teaching pyrokinesis at school…). That is also the reason why Touma brings Index to her, because she is the only non-psychic person in the city, and as such can use magic.

Why? Simply put, magic had originally been created by the normal people who seeked to obtain similar powers to those of the psychics. These spells were only conceived for people without psychic abilities, so psychics cannot use them. Vice versa, normal people can’t use psychic powers.

She might be able to use Index’s magic indeed. HOWEVER, she never seemed to use magic before and doesn’t know how it works at all. So, without psychic or magic abilities, just what on earth does she do to remain in that childlike form… she even keeps wearing such childish (cute) clothes! Is she some kind of non-evolving genius loli? Wahaha…

They’re quite cute.

But Kuroko’s voice is quite unfitting imo.

Ah, there was also a quick appearance of Railgun Girl a.k.a. Misaka Mikoto, and her friend Shirai Kuroko who’s a Judgment. The notion of “Judgments” is explained thoroughly in the spin-off manga To Aru Kagaku no Railgun… A Certain Scientific Railgun, which (obviously) follows Mikoto’s adventures. In short, Judgments are psychics like Kuroko who maintain peace and order within the university district, like a police force of some sorts.
This is interesting though, are they trying to mix both mangas? (Then again, it might just have been like that in the original light novel… figures.)

Lots of stuff to look forward to next episode: more Komoe cuteness, and a new dangerous figure appears! In b4 random Tenjo Tenge joke.

bwaaahahahahaha <3<3<3<3
